Berchtesgaden is a national park in southern Germany. It?s a place where nature is still nature, a paradise that holds your breath at every corner of the national park. To understand better what we?re talking about, we?re going to share a resume of our trip at Berchtesgaden now. Find out which three places you shouldn?t miss once you?re in southern Germany.
Get lost in Berchtesgaden town
There is also a town called Berchtesgaden, don?t mix it with the national park. We stayed in this lovely town in an Airbnb apartment. The city has a very nice center with colorful and old houses. It doesn?t matter where you?ll walk to, there is a very high chance to have awesome views on the mountains that surround the town.
One day we checked out a viewpoint that gave us a very awesome view on the city and the mountains. The spot is called Lockstein.?There are several paths that you can take from the center to get to the viewpoint. It?s an easy walk even though sometime it?s a bit steep. We did this walk in the early morning and had lunch afterwards in the city center. It?s just perfect walk for a half day trip.
Which ankle do you like the most of Hintersee?
With every kilometer that you get closer to the national park Berchtesgaden you?ll be impressed by the landscape. That?s what happened to us on the day of arrival. We were super excited to have finally arrived and stopped at Hintersee. This is another very unique place in the national park of Berchtesgaden and a must-see when you?re there. Park your car outside of the lake region, for example at the hiking parking. Other parkings that are just next to the lake do charge parking fees. Take advantage of parking outside by taking a very nice walk through the forest to the lake.
Then we recommend to walk around Hintersee. You will have many different perspectives on the lake and the backgrounds. Every ankle is super beautiful. Moreover, you will pass through some restaurants and coffee bars. There you can also rent boats, especially at high season. In our case, we visited Hintersee in low season in November. Many restaurants have been closed. So be aware to take enough drinks and food if you travel to the lake in low season.
Don?t miss the echo of K?nigssee!
Do not miss the famous K?nigssee! That?s the place of magic because the landscape and the views may change in few minutes. When we arrive at the popular lake we didn?t see anything. The lake was covered by mystical fog and created a real autumn atmosphere.
Fortunately the weather changed suddenly. The dense fog dissolved. Then we decided to take a boat. Good to know: the touristic boats run with electrical power to protect the environment. The boat tour was the most magical moment on our trip. The views are gorgeous and you will feel like cruising through the fjords in Norway.
One breathtaking highlight is the echo of K?nigssee! The captain plays his trumpet out of the boat and the mountains answer by playing the same sounds. It was just a fantastic experience.

Before taking the boat you need to decide which route you want to take. There are several options in high season like cruising until the little sister lake called Obersee. In low season Obersee is closed because of huge waterfalls on the way that make a trip on boat unsafe. Furthermore there are several hiking options around K?nigssee. Plan in advance which trip you want to do, which boat to take and at what time you need to be back to get the last boat.
We visited the beautiful church St. Bartholom? and took some walks around there. There is also a restaurant where you can get great local food and drinks. Another option is to do some hiking from St. Bartholom?. For example you can hike to Eiskapelle or the mountain Watzmann. Be aware that in low seasons the last boat leaves at around 4pm and in high season at around 6pm depending on where you take the boat. More information on the touristic website.
Our resume about the four day trip in Berchtesgaden
We loved this region and have been super flashed about its beauty. It was a very good time for traveling because there, first of all, there were few tourists. We can imagine that in spring and summertime this place is crowded. Secondly, we loved the mystical environment created by autumn. Unfortunately, we haven?t had the time to do some real hikes. Also in autumn twilight starts super early, that means less time for enjoying nature. Because of the great experience we made, we definitely want to go back to explore the mountains peaks.
